BOCA RATON, Fla., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ — According to the U.S. Fire Administration, people over the age of 65 have a home fire death rate nearly twice the national average. For those over 75, that risk nearly triples. These statistics are alarming, especially when researchers estimate that by the year 2030, there will be more than 70 million senior Americans. In Canada, the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall reports that seniors over the age of 65 accounted for 30 percent of all fire fatalities reported between 1999 and 2008.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090303/LA78154LOGO-b)

Anndee Soderberg, with ADT Security Services, said, “Taking home fire safety precautions can help keep seniors safe and can also mean the difference between life and death.” So it is important that everyone keep the following senior fire safety tips in mind:

    * The American Burn Association recommends keeping your eyeglasses, hearing aids and a flashlight close to the bed. Looking around for these things during a fire can cost you valuable, life-saving time.
* Never smoke in bed or while lying on the couch. According to the National Fire Protection Association, smoldering cigarettes are the leading cause of fire deaths in the U.S.
* Never leave food unattended on the stove. When leaving the kitchen, take a wooden spoon or potholder as a reminder to return and turn off the oven and or burners.
* Turn off space heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep. Space heaters can be a serious senior fire safety risk. Be extremely cautious when using both space and kerosene heaters and always keep at least three feet between portable heaters and anything that can burn, including clothing, drapery, blankets, furniture, papers and even pets.
* Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and consider monitored detection services. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, every year over 1,200 senior citizens die in fires. Many of these fire deaths may have been prevented with monitored smoke detection services connected to a monitoring center that operates 24/7 and can alert seniors, their care givers and first responders to a home fire.
* Consider technology such as bedside fire alarm clocks and bed shakers. These are designed to awaken heavy sleepers and seniors with hearing loss.

Soderberg said, “We hope these tips help seniors create their own fire safety plans so they can live longer and more independently in their own homes.”

We’ve all received our share of spam e-mail advertising Internet pharmacies, pushing all sorts of drugs, from pain medications to Viagra®. Not only is that junk mail unwanted and annoying, if you buy from these purveyors, you could be putting your health — or your life — in danger! Buying prescriptions from unknown sources might put you at risk for receiving counterfeit or substandard medications.

Some online pharmacies operate outside the US, meaning they’re not governed by our state and federal laws. According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency, importing prescriptions from other countries is illegal and might even be dangerous. “Consumers are exposed to a number of risks when they purchase drugs from foreign sources or from sources that are not operated by pharmacies licensed under state pharmacy law. These outlets may dispense expired, sub potent, contaminated or counterfeit product; the wrong or contraindicated (medically inadvisable) product; incorrect doses or medication unaccompanied by adequate directions for use.” (http://www.cbp.gov)

Molly McClain, RPh, has been a pharmacist for 20 years. “Some Internet pharmacies may sell prescriptions for less than a traditional pharmacy, but you can’t be sure where it’s coming from.” She added that some insurance companies require that their subscribers have their prescriptions filled either by mail or online by a company they recommend. In these cases, you certainly can trust the web site. But, “there’s a lot to be said for that personal contact,” McClain says. “Your local pharmacist is there for you to talk to, can counsel you on the use of your medicines and possible side effects and interactions and even have your medications delivered to you if you’re unable to make the trip to the pharmacy,” according to McClain. Molly and her husband, Pat McClain, also a registered pharmacist, own and operate the Prescription Shoppe in Carthage, Tar Heel Drug in Robbins and Peak City Pharmacy in Apex, North Carolina.

If you do decide to purchase your prescriptions on the Internet, the US Food and Drug Administration recommends that you:

Only buy from state-licensed pharmacy Web sites located in the U.S.

Don’t buy from Web sites that sell prescription drugs without a prescription.

Don’t buy from Web sites that offer to prescribe a drug for the first time without a physical exam by your doctor or by answering an online questionnaire.

Check with your state board of pharmacy or the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy to see if an online pharmacy has a valid pharmacy license and meets state quality standards.

Look for privacy and security policies that are easy to find and easy to understand.

Don’t give any personal information, such as a social security number, credit card information, or medical or health history, unless you are sure the Web site will keep your information safe and private.

Use legitimate Web sites that have a licensed pharmacist to answer your question.

Make sure that the Web site will not sell your personal information, unless you agree. (http://www.fda.gov)

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® has published a list of recommended online pharmacies and another list of those they do not recommend. To view the lists, visit their web site at http://www.nabp.net/.

TYPE O NEG AND B NEG BLOOD LEVELS DROP TO EMERGENCY LEVELS

Red Cross urging donors to give blood during critical time

Moore County, NC – As a result of the recent bad weather across the country, on the heels of the holiday season, the blood supply has drastically decreased in the Carolinas Region. Type O negative and type B negative blood supplies have dropped to emergency levels and help is needed now! Since type O negative blood can be used for any patient when there is not time to determine the patient’s blood type, it is crucial that there is a sufficient supply.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. The American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to 103 hospitals and must have 1,600 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand. Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source.

The Red Cross encourages people who are in good health to donate so that hospital patients have the blood or platelets they need to make a full recovery. Blood is needed to help treat a variety of patients including accident victims and individuals undergoing surgery and cancer treatment.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.

For more information or to locate a nearby blood drive, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (448-3543) or visit www.redcrossmoorenc.org.

North Carolina’s Smoke-Free Restaurants and Bars Law goes into effect on January 2, 2010. Restaurant and bar patrons won’t be allowed to light up in enclosed places, starting on the 2nd of January. The law also applies to enclosed areas of most hotels and motels. The law requires affected businesses to have signs posted. If you have any question about where you may or may not smoke in any North Carolina business, check with the management.

Will this new law have any impact on bar business? Will it result a reduction in smokers quitting the habit? Let us know what you’re thinking!
